HAVING won promotion after just one season out of the Aire-Wharfe League top flight, Guiseley got off to a winning start back in Division One and will look to build on that at home to Collingham on Saturday.

New skipper Stewart Smith led them to a five-wicket win at North Leeds after a career best 4-9 from Damon Reeve and two wickets each for Marcus Brown, Richard Nichols and 22-year-old South African debutant Heynrych Nel dismissed the home side for 132.

Collingham, in contrast, lost heavily to champions Beckwithshaw, but Smith knows not to take lightly any side that includes Toby Jacklin and former Rawdon star Kuda Samunderu.

Burley are also looking to build on a winning start after their impressive victory over Otley.

Nick Brook starred with both bat and ball, and in that form Burley should be too strong for North Leeds.

Otley travel to Colton determined to show that defeat was just early-season ring rustiness, but won’t find the promoted side short of confidence, having come close to overcoming a strong Bilton outfit.

Ilkley are next up to face Bilton, and they need to improve from their opening form against a team that look to have signed a star in Kiel van Vollenhoven, who hit 71 and took 6-55 on debut.

Pool fell just short in their chase of Rawdon’s 207-9 in the opener and face an even tougher task against Beckwithshaw, while Rawdon entertain Horsforth, with both sides having started the campaign with satisfactory victories.

Evergreen Mick Scott and Mahir Ali, the league’s leading wicket-taker last season, gave Tong Park Esholt the perfect start to life in Division Two when they skittled Thackley out for 51.

They might find that fellow promoted outfit Leeds Modernians are a tougher proposition.

Thackley, who have lost some key players during the winter, including Andrew Stothart, Jack Holland, Amer Ayub and Josh Brooksbank, entertain Adel, who look to have strengthened in a bid to improve on last season’s mid-table spot.

Calverley pulled off something of a surprise in beating the much-fancied Follifoot.

They meet Hall Park, who will not be lacking in confidence after the way they tested Kirkstall.

It’s Ben Rhydding’s turn to tackle Kirkstall this week, while Addingham travel to Follifoot.

Having lost their first match since relegation, Steeton will be keen to get on track, but won’t find Skipton easy after Ben Holderness inspired them to a comfortable win over Ben Rhydding.

League new boys Saltaire look to make it two wins out of two in Division Three when they welcome Alwoodley to Roberts Park.

But their opponents, once the league’s perennial whipping boys, look to have greatly strengthened this season and will provide a searching test.

Alwoodley made short work of Green Lane last week, and Lane will need to step up two or three gears against the league’s other newomers St Chads Broomfield, who comfortably eased past New Rover last week.

Olicanian, who have twice narrowly missed out on promotion, will hope they find Rover in the same mood when they travel to the Richmond Oval, while Bolton Villas entertain Bardsey, with both having sat out the first week’s programme.
