During the temporary absence of one of the operatives at the Otley Paper Mills, Mr H W T Garnett, had occasion to attend to one of the machines. In doing so, his right hand got into the working part, and before he could withdraw it, the ends of three fingers were taken off. |
Attendance is improving at schools 8:15am Thu 1 May 08 125 years ago
IT was remarked at a meeting of the Otley School Board that attendance at school was improving although many children had been obliged to be absent on account of illness, mumps having been very prevalent. The managers of all the schools have to send a list of half-timers and the clerk or other officer of the local authority will have to certify as to whether the names on the list have been employed in conformity with the by laws. |

The Queen's Bench Division of the High Court heard a case brought by objectors to the stoppage of a footpath by the Yeadon Local Board. The Jus-tices of the Peace in Yeadon had ordered that a certain footpath in Yeadon be stopped up but the appellants complained that the stoppage of the way was to them a stoppage of a convenient and necessary highway. But the appeal was dismissed. |

It may not be generally known that four Yeadon born sons, by dint of indomitable energy, have made themselves a name and position second to none among the great commercial houses of America. We allude to the Brothers Walker, sons of the late Matthew Walker and who lived at Yeadon carrying on the business of waste dealer. The brothers are at the head of one of the largest mining houses in America. |
Yeadon tailor is robbed 8:00am Thu 10 Apr 08 125 years ago
The shop of Mr A Rawnsley, tailor, outfitter and grocer, High Street, Yeadon, was broken into and money and cloth, to the value of nearly £200, stolen. It is thought that the thieves entered by the cellar window which was found open. The police have been informed of the matter but no clue has yet been discovered to the perpetrators of the burglary. |

At the Otley police court, Isaac Emsley applied for an ejectment order against a woman who had taken possession of a house in Guy Croft. She had asked for the key for the house to see if it suited her for rent. She took possession of the house but did not pay any rent and positively refused to leave when asked to do so. An order was made but not to be enforced for seven days. |

Mr Pullan, of Brunswick Villa, Otley, has submitted to us an extraordinary egg laid by a goose 36 years old, now in the possession of Mr Charles Pullan, of Darley. The egg is perfectly symmetrical, weighs over 11 ounces, and its longest circumference is 12 inches. We believe this is the largest egg, shapely and perfect, which has heretofore been brought under our notice. |

A meeting in Otley of the committee of the Wharfedale Agricultural Society discussed the question of how the recent foot and mouth restrictions would affect the forthcoming show. It was resolved that the meeting be adjourned for one month in order to see if the dis-ease abated, or if the restrictions on cattle movement were removed. |

Rags and Bones was the title of a lecture delivered by Mr Frank Curzon in the Otley Mechanics' Institute. The lecturer was very successful in the descriptions he drew of the human form and its adornments, and in ridiculing some of the most objectionable modes of female attire he made frequent and effective use of the blackboard. The lecture was thoroughly enjoyed. |
