Sherburn White Rose 1 Otley Town 1

After last week’s result this was a bit of a let down for second-placed Town.

Sherburn are in the lower half of the West Yorkshire League Premier Division but on a huge slopping pitch and a bad surface Town never got control of the game.

Its an old adage that its same for both teams but Sherburn knew how to play their pitch.

They put hard work into shutting down defenders and hit long balls over the top when attacking.

Otley never got going, struggling to come to terms with the conditions and after 30 minutes Gavin Phillis in the Town goal had to make a stunning double save.

But the home side took the lead after 33 minutes.

Several attempts to clear failed and Sherburn scored from close range.

Town tried hard in the second half but Sherburn’s long ball tactics caught them out several times.

Town secured a draw when a great one-two saw Scott Cater slip past the keeper and score from a tight angle.

Not many players came away with any real credit and they will need to do better at home to Whitkirk, on Saturday.
