World under-23 triathlon champion Jonathan Brownlee continued his family’s dominance of the Chevin Chase by storming to victory in the popular Boxing Day event.

Elder brother Alastair – the 2009 world triathlon champion – had won the event for the previous three years, but when flu prevented him from taking part, Jonathan seized his chance.

The Bramhope-based runner, wearing the colours of Bingley Harriers, conquered the seven-miletrail and fell course to win in a time of 38min 35sec.

He finished over a minute ahead of his team-mate Tim Midgley who was second in 39:47 Third-place went to Graham Pearce, of Pudsey and Bramley Athletics Club – a second-claim Ilkley Harrier in 41:04.

Ben Stevens of Ilkley Harriers ran strongly to finish fourth in 42:09.

His team-mate Ben Cox managed a top-ten finish as he claimed ninth position in 43:27 while Martin Archer was 11th in 43:53.

The first nine places in what is a regular challenge to blow off the cobwebs, were made up of members of Bingley Harriers, Pudsey and Bramley, Wharfedale Harriers and Ilkley Harriers.

Jon Holah, of Pudsey and Bramley, was first vet 50 home in eighth.

First lady home was Bingley’s Pauline Munro in 41st place in 47 minutes exactly, with Idle.s Donna Edmonson-Booker in second, just pipping Karen Hallas of Leeds City.

Otley runner Gill Myers, winner of the British fell racing Association under-50 women’s titles in the British and English championships, came in 112th for Wharfedale Harriers in 50:57.
