Lizzie Armitstead is again Otley’s pride and joy after picking up another pair of silver medals at the 2010 World Track Cycling Championships in Copenhagen.

The 21-year-old was runner-up in both the women’s team pursuit and the women’s omnium.

Armitstead, who picked up three medals in the same championships last year, joined up with Joanna Rowsell and Wendy Houvenagel in the pursuit.

They qualified second behind the Australians, who went on to take the world title.

Great Britain were up on the opening lap but from then on the Aussies began to step up the pace on their way to gold.

Armitstead was solid in the first two events of the omnium, going under 12 seconds in the 200 metres time trial.

She backed that up with second place in the scratch race and ninth in the individual pursuit, which won’t have pleased her that much.

However, Armitstead went into the afternoon’s event still in with a chance of a medal, third place in the points race putting her in the joint lead.

Another ninth-placed finish – this time in the 500 metres time trial – was good enough to give Armitstead a second silver medal.

It was an impressive first attempt by the Otley woman at what will be an Olympic discipline in London 2012, and a tired but happy rider said: “I am chuffed to pieces with that.

“It was good and I’m suprised. I did enjoy it. It was a bit of a mental game really and I enjoy that from the road (racing).

“But there is some work to be done on the sprint-type stuff.”
