The immensely popular Coniston 14 Road Race was held last Saturday but this year it had to be renamed the Coniston 14 Plus as damage to a bridge necessitated a modifi-cation to the route, lengthening the course by 2.7 miles!

On the positive side, this meant that both runners and spectators could enjoy the wonderful scenery for a little longer.

The race, which attracted more than 1,300 runners, was won by John Herbert of Werrington Joggers in 1hr 33min 49sec.

Otley’s Julian Mawson continued this year’s excellent form, finishing second in 1-38.33, with Dominic Raby of Chorley coming third.

Eleanor Greenfield of Nuneaton Harriers was first lady (and 46th overall) in 1-53.39. Otley’s Mick Jeffrey had another good run, finishing 145th in 2.03.11.

Also on Saturday, Fiona Burke again competed in the weekly Park Run in Leeds’ Hyde Park.

The race was won by Graham Hogg of Trafford AC in 16min 05sec. The previous week’s winner Gwilym Thomas was second.

First Lady, and 23rd overall, was Marisol Carrera of Bingley. For once, Fiona did not beat her previous best time and finished midfield in 27-32 Several races were run on Sunday. Howard Jeffrey crossed the Pennines to join about 4,500 runners in the Liverpool Half-Marathon.

The race was won by Paul Sankey of Liverpool in 1-13.35 and Howard finished 1150th in 1-47.40. Scott Harrington and Lloyd Best took part in the East Hull 20-mile Race.

The winner was Tom Danby of Pocklington, who finished in 1-57.42. Both Otley runners performed well, Scott finishing tenth in 2-05.41 and Lloyd coming 27th in 2-14.19 Also on Sunday, the Baildon Boundary Way attracted about 350 entrants and was well supported by Otley runners.

The race was won by Ilkley’s Tom Adams in 1hr 19min 09sec, with Richard Pattinson (Pudsey & Bramley) second and Richard Meade (Edinburgh) third.

Pauline Munro of Bingley was first lady, and 27th overall, in 1-33.41. For Otley, Liam Dunne had an excellent run to finish sixth in 1-28.01 and was well supported by Andy Hunt (16th), Steve Wallis (28th) and Simon Anderson (30th).

Laura Martin ran well for fourth lady and 50th overall. Other Otley runners, in finishing order, were Ben Cousen, Matt Podd, Colin Best, Sarah McBrinn, Liz Fawcett and David Cattanach.

Finally on Sunday, the Wakefield 10km Road Race was won by Mark Warmby (Newham & Essex Beagles) in 31min 07sec.

Warmby’s clubmate Stephen Hepples was second and Mohammed Yuaqub (unattached) was third.

Helen Singleton, of Wakefield Harriers, was first lady and 21st overall in 36-25. For Otley, Jack Robertshaw finished in 45.50, followed by Laura Taylor (48.54) and Kath Robertshaw (49.21). Kath and Jack won their respective categories.

Runners of all clubs (or none!) are reminded that the annual Otley 10-mile Road Race will be held on Wednesday, June 9. Further details and online entry may be accessed from the club’s website at www.otleyac.org.uk.

The club meets for training at Otley Cricket Club on Tuesday and Thursdays at 7.15pm. Runners of all standards are welcome.

Skyrac Athletic Club

Bleary eyed from the early start, due to the clocks going forward, four Skyrac runners finished the half-marathon distance of 13 and a bit miles over paths, tracks and canal towpaths that makes up the Baildon Boundary Way.

This is an ever-popular race, which closed its entries back in the first grip of winter last December.

The cold wind across Baildon Moor reminded the runners that winter has not long gone. Frank Glass led the stalwarts home in 58th position in a time of 1hr 42min 12sec, followed by super vet 65 Alan Bye, using the race as preparation for another London Marathon in 158th and 1:57:05.

Neil Bloor was just behind at 165th in 1:58:06, and finally Peter Rawnsley, making a return to racing, in 175th and a time of 1:59:25. All went home happy with a smart green sweatshirt to show for their endeavours.

There was a Winter Warm-Up at Cleckheaton. On a very windy day, Adam Brooks (440 metres and 200 metres), Joe Whitehurst (400 metres), Sam Birch (400 metres and discus) and Beth Cotton (100 metres and 200 metres) competed well in testing conditions.

Skyrac’s presentation night is tomorrow (7.30pm). All are welcome.
