JOE Royston of Aireborough Thai Boxing Club hopes that his February visit to Thailand will allow him to make great strides within the sport.

It’s been a successful year for the 22-year-old in the ring, with his most recent victory arriving in Newcastle at the Vertu Motors Arena on November 4, when he defeated Josh Wray in his first major bout.

2024 offers Royston with an opportunity to push himself to the limit, and he believes he’ll be able to truly see what that represents when he visits Thailand next month.

He said: “I’ll be training at FA Group gym in Bangkok which is home to some of the best Thai boxers in the world. It’ll be so educational for me as a fighter. I’m hopeful that I’ll get a couple of fights with the experience of following professional rules, which should give me a massive edge over domestic fighters once I’m back. I started Thai boxing when I was eighteen to improve my self-confidence up and acquire some self-defence skills,” explained Royston.

“Thai boxing is an amazing sport and what’s most enjoyable is reaping the rewards for the effort made.”

Royston trains under Alan Burley at Aireborough Thai Boxing Club and is quick to extol the benefits of his sport.

He said: “Thai boxing brings physical and health benefits such as fitness and strength however the mental benefits are just as powerful. Being in the gym helps build confidence and improve social skills. Walking into the Aireborough gym the first time is the best thing I ever did. From helping to rebuild my confidence when I first started to just recently keeping me focused on my training routine when I lost my mother. All the support from my Thai boxing family is what got me through that, as did focusing on the training routine and discipline.”

Head coach Alan Burley commented: “He’ll (Royston) benefit from an extended period in Thailand. He’s won his two semi-professional bouts confidently including one on a big show in Newcastle last November and has lots of potential. He’s also deeply involved in the gym and contributing to its family feel where everyone is part of our team. He’s keen to assist the juniors in training or improving technique and is an excellent role model.”

“I’m proud of where I am now but intend to push myself as far as I can, getting as much experience as possible,” explained Royston.

“Winning a national title is my current goal. The Bangkok trip is a vital part of my strategy, but like all athletes aiming to be elite I need help to achieve it. I’m grateful to anyone willing to assist..”
