AIREBOROUGH maintained their winning start to 2017 with a hard-fought Yorkshire Three victory.
Willowbridge Lane, home to Castleford, has been a graveyard for Aireborough sides over the past five years which makes the result, and performance, even more impressive as they continue their push for promotion.
Aireborough were strong in defence and clinical in attack. They took a deserved 16-5 lead into half-time through unconverted tries from the back row duo of Jonny Mackey and Chris Chapman with full-back Nick Holdsworth adding two penalties either side of Castleford’s sole try.
The second half saw Castleford lay siege to the Aireborough try line but resolute defence rebuffed numerous dangerous attacks a.
Eventually, Castleford began to tire and Aireborough enjoyed their fair share of territory and possession. They were rewarded with another late Holdsworth penalty to secure a well-earned 19-5 victory.
Aireborough have another stern test of their promotion credentials on Saturday as they travel to fourth-place Goole – another graveyard for visiting Aire teams.
