Goole 15 Yarnbury 24

YARNBURY took the chance to rest some key players while blooding others in a match played in constant rain.

They made seven changes in all from the side that had lost to Yorkshire One leaders Doncaster Phoenix the previous week but still came up with a winning combination.

The Yorkshire Shield offers the winners entry into the RFU Intermediate Cup and the chance to play at Twickenham – something

Yarnbury savoured in the RFU Senior Vase earlier this year.

The Horsforth side made immediate headway with Carl Paterson, playing at inside centre, making a quick break which led to full back Lee Mortimer scoring a try which was ruled out for a forward pass.

Another backs move came to nothing in the quagmire conditions before Goole regrouped and got into the game with a penalty close in from centre Alan Neill.

Yarnbury immediately replied through a penalty try when the forwards drove for the line and Selby were penalised for killing the ball. Paterson had no trouble adding the conversion.

The pack was coping well in the scrums with with props John Dodson and Andy Butterfield at prop and Richard Lister hooking.

The welcome return of Ian Maycock to the second row meant Goole's forwards were under pressure.

The home side surprised Yarnbury when they broke away for centre Jamie Shand to score a try which gave them an 8-7 lead, but their advantage was short lived.

Paterson steadied Yarnbury with a coolly struck penalty to put them 10-8 up at the break.

Good forward play created the opportunity for an attacking scrum which saw No.8 Jimmy Cryan crash over for try which Paterson converted early in the second half.

It was followed by the try of the game from Paterson who had moved up to stand-off to allow Olly Hardaker to try his luck at full back.

Paterson showed all his skill and experience to beat the Goole back line and the covering full back with a shimmy and a dropped shoulder. He added the conversion for good measure.

Goole came into the game well in the final quarter and centre Rhys Miller added their second unconverted try.

He would have made the score closer if substitute flanker Greg Trencher had not stopped him with a bone crunching tackle.

In the closing stages the experience of skipper Oliver Cashman and Andy Van Heel ensured that Goole were kept at bay.
