Todd Brabiner has set his sights on next year’s ABAE championships after an impressive performance in the coveted Haringey Box Cup.

The 22-year-old Menston boxer crowned a successful first season by winning three bouts in four days at Alexandra Palace to take the A71 class.

Brabiner, who boxes for the Eccleshill-based Platinum Club said: “It was an incredible event. It was a huge venue and it was great to box there.

“Winning my class was a real boost and it has made me determined to have a go at the ABAE Championships next year.

“I am totally dedicated to boxing. I train Monday to Thursdays at Platinum with my trainer Dave Nelson and then work out at Club Energy in Otley and do running and training on my own at weekends.”

Brabiner has only been boxing competitively for six months and this three Haringey Cup wins take his career record to seven victories in eight bouts.

Brabiner had his first contest in January and suffered a points defeat – the only blot on his record to date. Since then he has reeled off seven points victories.

To win the senior A71 class at Alexandra Palace Brabiner had to come through three tough encounters.

In the quarter finals last Thursday he defeated Mario Oliveras of Portsmouth 4-1, and he followed up by defeating Redbridge’s Akim Melbourne 4-1 on points on Saturday.

The final saw him narrowly outpoint the Swizz boxer Mergion Vakshing 3-2.

Brabiner said: “Oliveras was a tall southpaw with an awkward style. I ploughed in during the last round and I think that is what earned me the win.

“My semi-final opponent was also taller than me and I had to find a way of working my way inside to score points, while the Swiss lad in the final was extremely tough.

“He had received a bye to the semi-final so he had had one less bout then me, but I managed to box well enough to get the verdict.”

Brabiner, who works for his father’s business RJB Construc- tion, said: “I felt a bit stiff when I went back to work on Monday. Three bouts in four days was tough, but winning was a nice feeling.”
