Old Grovians 54, Hornsea 0

This was a dominant performance by Old Grovians - a display of running, expansive rugby with a result which was every bit as emphatic as the scoreline suggests.

A week ago Old Grovians claimed promotion and the SSE Yorkshire Division Four title with a scrappy, attritional win.

Back on home soil, they turned on the style and produced a championship-winning performance to celebrate the title in front of their own supporters.

It was a fitting way to pay tribute to veteran lock Dave Roberts who played the full 80 minutes in what was his final first-team game before taking charge of the Second XV next season.

There have been fewer committed or tougher players at the club since it was formed, and fittingly he was named man of the match.

Old Grovians set the tone for the game early on with two shuddering tackles from hooker Matthew Worrall, and they were ahead inside seven minutes. Full back Joel Bradley released winger Joe Sowden, who broke tackles on his way to the line.

Hornsea had their best moment shortly after when their scrum half broke from inside his own 22, leaving Dean Hogg in his wake as he sprinted down the right touchline, only to be denied by a magnificent try-saving tackle from Dominic Copsey.

From then on, the home side exerted total control as Sowden again showed his strength to break free and cross for the game's second try.

Despite losing skipper Chris Blackhall, flanker Brad Williams and back-row forward Tom Dalton in the space of a couple of minutes to injury, Old Grovians extended their advantage further when centre Anthony Griffin broke the defensive line before finding prop John Oakes in support to score the try.

Four minutes before half-time, Bradley scored the try of the match. Hornsea failed to find touch with a penalty deep inside Old Grovians' 22 and Hogg ran the ball from his own line before Griffin and Copsey were involved in a move which took them from one end of the pitch to the other, allowing Bradley to secure the bonus point and send the home side into half-time with 26-0 lead.

Despite steady rain falling at Elm Tree Farm, the second half showed no let up in the scoring, Old Grovians showing a ruthless streak which has made them the division's most potent offence this season.

Sam Robinson crossed the try line after 43 minutes and a brace from Griffin stretched the lead to 47-0.

Robinson closed out the game after another Sowden break took advantage of a tiring Hornsea defence.

His pass seemingly put Robinson in the clear, only for the flanker to slip and fall before stumbling his way over the try line to take Old Grovians past 50 points.

It's a mark of how much Old Grovians have progressed that Horsnea - the division's form team behind Old Grovians since the turn of the year - were beaten so convincingly.

Make no mistake, they will be challenging in the top half of the table next season but for Old Grovians a journey which began with a gruelling pre-season campaign last July has climaxed in unforgettable fashion.

They have the division's top-scoring offence and the tightest defence, but, most importantly, promotion and the Yorkshire Four title.
