Matt Wilson was the hero for Guiseley on Tuesday night as he grabbed a last-minute equaliser to salvage a vital point for the Lions.

Guiseley had to play much of the 2-2 draw with ten men after Wayne Brooksby’s early red card and will be delighted to have got a point against a strong Gloucester side.

Manager Steve Kittrick said: “Coming here and doing what we’ve done tonight might win us the league. They all put a really good shift in, I think we even had more possession in the second half.”

Kittrick wasn’t happy with the sending off, saying: “They both went up for the ball and he’s gone down like he’s been shot. That decision killed us.”

The controversial awarding of a penalty also riled Kittrick: “I definitely think he got the ball.

“I questioned the referee about it and he said he took the man, in which case it should have been a red card.

“I think Phil Marsh could have had a penalty at the other end too.”

Despite Guiseley having only ten men, which could have got even worse after they conceded the penalty, Kittrick believes they played well in the second half.

He said: “We’ve shown some bottle tonight. We took some risks towards the end, only playing three at the back but thankfully Matt Wilson’s come on, had two touches and put the second in the back of the net.”

There will be no let up for Guiseley in the coming weeks, with games coming thick and fast.

Tough games against Vauxhall Motors this Saturday and Colwyn Bay on Tuesday will further test the depth of Kittrick’s squad. He said: “We’ve got to take each game as it comes, it’s an old cliche but I think we’ve got to do that. Chester will drop points, we’ll drop points but we’ve shown spirit and fight and there’s a good camaraderie in the dressing room.”

“The lads are gutted. They think they should have had a penalty, there’s been a couple cleared off the line but we’ve got a good dressing room in there,” said Kittrick.

With two games a week a common occurrence from now on, Guiseley’s dressing room spirit will come under serious examination.
