Plans to build another 400 new homes in Horsforth could be the end of life as we know it, a councillor claims.

An application to build 400 homes on Horsforth’s former Clariant site is with planners.

But the proposals for the former factory site could lead to potential gridlock and have a serious impact on local facilities, it is being warned.

The outline application from Harrow Estates would include a shop and allotments, and would retain the existing sports ground and pavilion.

Earlier this year local councillors and the then MP, Paul Truswell, objected to plans for 550 homes on the Clariant and Riverside sites.

With 1,100 homes already approved for the nearby Kirkstall Forge site and other potential developments for the surrounding area Horsforth Coun Brian Cleasby is warning: “Life as we know it in our area will be severely harmed, without new infrastructure, which, of course, is not planned.”

He said: “All of us are having to travel further and further because all our employment land in the north-west is being/has been built upon. This problem was identified by the council in 2002 and now ignored.

“Planners and developers have also ignored the concerns of ward councillors, town councillors and residents by coming up with a plan that uses Horsforth’s stretched facilities in a ridiculous attempt to make these sites appear sustainable.”

He said Calverley Lane North was to be a bus-only exit to the Ring Road, and traffic from Calverley Lane South would only be able to exit onto the Ring Road by turning left and then climbing the hill to the Horsforth/A65 roundabout.
