A LAST Night of the Proms style concert in Otley has been hailed a success.

The event took place at Otley Methodist Church Hall on Saturday, April 21 and featured Drighlington Brass Band and local singer Sylvia Cullen.

More than 100 people attended, with proceeds from the ticket sales going to Otley Town Mayor Councillor Nigel Francis' 14+1 charity appeal.

Cllr Francis said: "Drighlington Brass Band showed just why they are such a top band with a very polished and classy performance, while singer Sylvia Cullen was the cherry on top of the cake.

"It was a good time to stage such an event as it was only two days before St George’s Day and it just happened to fall on the Queen’s birthday.

"The first half opened with Phoenix followed by Labour and Love, which were both well received, before a classic rendition of the theme from Ladies in Lavender which was very beautifully played as a solo on the cornet.

"A tribute to the film Brassed off showed just why brass band music and Yorkshire go together so well, and the first half closed with Pines of Rome, during which you could almost feel the legions marching through our county.

"The second half was a true British ‘proms’ event with Rule Britannia Overture and Brilliante, quickly followed by the playing of All in the April Evening.

"The highlight of the evening was the Proms Finale when flags were waved, feet stamped, and people sang.

"It started with Fantasia on British Seas Songs, which had the audience clapping along and stamping their feet in time to the music, before Sylvia took centre stage and led the singing of the British anthems Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.

"For someone so young in years, she showed a remarkable maturity and her singing was the highlight of the night."
