A GUNGE challenge has helped an Aireborough school raise more than £900 for Comic Relief.
Pupils and staff at St Oswald’s C of E Primary, Guiseley raised the cash by buying Red Noses and paying £1 to wear non-uniform clothing on Red Nose Day - Friday, March 24.
They also paid 20p a vote to have one of their teachers covered in gunge, with Deputy Headteacher Phil Sheppard emerging as the unlucky 'winner'.
Headteacher Rupert Madeley said: "The children bought Red Noses and also paid £1 to wear something red instead of school uniform on the day itself.
"Most popular by far, however, was the Gunge Vote.
"Throughout the week, the children bought votes, at 20p each for the teachers.
"The winner was the Deputy Headteacher, Mr Sheppard, with a massive 77 per cent of the vote.
"All the children and many parents gathered on the playground at the end of Friday school to watch him get covered in gunge.
"When asked about it afterwards, Mr Sheppard said: ‘It was horrible stuff, but it was worth it. We are so proud of how much we raised this year for such a good cause.'"
