A MENSTON estate agents has started a new Community Champion scheme - and named the first winner.

Ribston Pippin has launched the initiative, which celebrates those who 'go the extra mile' for their neighbourhood, to mark its fourth year in the village.

Husband and wife team Andy and Lisa Greer presented the first award to resident Beth Street, who recently led the fundraising to get a new defibrillator installed at Menston rail station.

Beth, who completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks and a 10k run for the cause, received a beauty treatment voucher from another Menston business, Aspire to Be, in recognition of her efforts.

She said: “Thank goodness we found Menston - it is a beautiful village and I find people very warm, friendly, helpful and generous.

"Of course, there's also the beautiful scenery around the village.

"It is this environment that started me walking, then running, and being a part of all this also led to me wanting to fundraise through various charities or projects in the community."

She added: "I was shocked to be heralded a community champion as I don’t really think anything of it, but very much appreciate the gesture!

"I do hope more projects will be happening in the village, especially for our youth in the near future and, hopefully, to help Steve Ellams and Menston Community Association."

On top of her local efforts Beth, who moved to the village 12 years ago, also runs her own charity AngelsForChildren.org.uk, which helps underprivileged children in the Philippines.

Ribston Pippin is now seeking its next community champion as it aims to honour a different local winner for each month of 2017.

Lisa Greer said: "We just wanted to say a big 'thank you Beth' from all of us in your local community, for everything you do.

"We feel passionately that people like Beth should be recognised and rewarded."

Anyone who would like to nominate the next champion should send an e-mail to lisa@ribstonpippin.co.uk .
