A MILKMAN who has cheerfully served the village for more than 30 years has been named Pool-in-Wharfedale's new Honorary Citizen.

Dairyman Jim Smith received the shield for the Pool Parish Council-organised accolade, which relies on public nominations, at St Wilfrid's Church on Sunday.

Mr Smith was nominated for his cheery and caring disposition, reliability, constant willingness to help and his efforts to support local causes.

The award was presented during Pool's annual civic service by MP Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West), who was introduced by Pool Parish Chairman, Councillor Hazel Lee.

She said: "Jim is our local dairyman and people recommended him because he never misses a delivery, he keeps an eye on people who live alone, he shows kindness and patience and goes out of his way to help people, is always cheerful and chatty.

"He is one of a dying breed of tradesman, and supports the school and pre-school and all sorts of charities in the village.

"He richly deserves this honour and was absolutely delighted to receive the shield, and gave a very nice acceptance speech."
