SAFETY inspectors have decided that scaffolding will have to remain in place around one of Otley’s iconic buildings over Christmas.
Leeds City Council had hoped to complete a full structural survey of the Santander Bank, in Kirkgate, before Otley Victorian Fayre attracts its usual large crowds on December 7.
But after finding major cracks in the upper stonework that could compromise the safety of the property’s chimney, the authority is now expecting rebuilding work to be required – which could take until the end of January.
The council usually tries to minimise scaffolding at this time of year, but says its hand has been forced on this occasion due to safety concerns.
Councillor Colin Campbell said: “It is unfortunate that the scaffolding will have to remain in place over the Victorian Fayre and Christmas period, but this is an iconic building in the Otley Conservation Area and must be protected.”
