AN UNPOPULAR new one-way system in Otley is set to be changed before Christmas.

The existing scheme, which covers Charles Street, Nelson Street and Walkergate, has been roundly condemned by most residents and traders since it was introduced last month.

The system has caused long tailbacks at peak times, and a petition to have it changed or scrapped altogether has gathered nearly 900 signatures.

Now it looks as though the critics have cause to at least partially celebrate.

Leeds City Council is planning to alter the scheme so that the traffic flow on Charles Street and Walkergate - though not Nelson Street - is reversed, and vehicles turning from Bondgate can once again use the roads.

Councillor Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) hopes the changes can be implemented before the town’s busy festive period.

He said: “The current scheme is not working properly and many members of the public who have commented have said they feel it might work better if traffic flows were reversed.

“The city council has suggested that as a way forward a temporary reversal of the scheme should be put in place to check if there are any further issues.

“This seems a sensible way forward in that it allows a proper evaluation of the scheme and will allow the public to comment.

“We have asked that if possible it be put in place as soon as possible to minimise disruption in the run up to Christmas.”

The news has been hailed by the local business community.

Otley BID (Business Improvement District) board member Sally Hinchliffe, of Bondgate Bakery, had earlier warned that the system was proving “disastrous” for trade and could deter shoppers from using Otley.
She said: “This is great news and it makes sense, it’s exactly right - I can understand the need for it being one-way but up until now it’s been the wrong way.
“I think all the traders and publicans on Bondgate, especially, will be very happy indeed because this will make our lives a lot easier.
“I’m absolutely delighted and it’s great that Leeds have actually listened so quickly.”
The new arrangements are to be trialled and will be made permanent if they are found to work smoothly.
Otley Town Council had heard from two Crow Lane residents this week how the current one-way system had caused “horrendous” rat-running along their narrow street.
One said: “The cars at 8am on a weekday just fly along.”
