The new Lord Mayor of Bradford was officially sworn in on Tuesday during City Hall's annual display of pomp and pageantry.

Party politics was put aside for a good hour-and-a-half in the Council chamber, as all groups paid tribute to outgoing Lord Mayor, Councillor Khadim Hussain, and welcomed his successor, Councillor Mike Gibbons.

Members of the West Yorkshire Police Band played a fanfare as Coun Gibbons entered the chamber for the first time wearing the ceremonial robes, hat and chain.

He said: "I am extremely honoured to be your new Lord Mayor and accept that the position comes with much history."

And Coun Gibbons revealed that this year, money raised through the Lord Mayor's Appeal will be split between Marie Curie Cancer Care and community-led groups and projects across the district.

He said he would soon give more details about how donations would be given to community projects, while he had "a long association" with Marie Curie.

He said: "A number of friends and colleagues are at the moment affected by cancer-related problems."
