Three young musicians from St Mary’s Catholic High School, Menston recently excelled in representing the school in public performances and competitions.

Year 9 pianist Mingzhe Feng recently won the Key Stage 3 class of the Rotary Club Young Musician (Aireborough district) and will go on to compete in the Yorkshire Rotary Young Musician competition next February in York.

Matthew Spalding, Year 12, recently starred in the Bradford Catholic Players production of Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Bradford Alhambra as Bun Foo. A talented musician, Matthew sings and plays the trumpet and piano.

He will be playing John in the school’s forthcoming production of Miss Saigon next February.

Elizabeth Rogozinski, Year 12, was successful in gaining a place in the Leeds Community Big Band. Auditions were held at the Leeds College of Music in July – only 17 other musicians were accepted.

The band played at Leeds Town Hall, raising money for BBC Children in Need and were recorded by BBC Radio Leeds and BBC Radio 2.

Special guest singers with the band included Claire Teal and Olly Murs.
