A disabled grandmother has been left helpless after thieves stole her mobility car and scooter.

Hazel Silvester, 62, who suffers from a degenerative spinal condition, says she is lost without her scooter, which was not covered by insurance.

And she fears the essential equipment, which was a lifeline for her, will simply be dumped by burglars.

Hazel was asleep in her Newlay Wood Close home in Horsforth when thieves struck on the night of October 27.

As well as taking jewellery, cash and other items, they stole her £22,000 Vauxhall Insignia car along with her scooter, which was collapsed in the back of the vehicle.

“The scooter is my lifeline,” she said. “I am absolutely lost without it.

“My drive is on a gradient and I can barely get to the top of it before the pain kicks in.

“The insurance people have given me a temporary car at the moment so I can get from A to B. But after that, I can’t do anything.

“I am absolutely lost without the scooter. It cost me £1,200 when I bought it six years ago – but what it would cost now I don’t know.”

Hazell believes her car may have been stolen to order, and the thieves may not have realised there was a scooter inside.

“I think it is just going to be dumped somewhere,” she said.

The grandmother of five, who works in an accounts office, is now dependent on her partner, John Sellers, to drive her around.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed they were investigating and had offered security advice to Ms Silvester.

Anyone who has seen the car – registration number YK61 YDM – or the burgundy scooter should call Aireborough and Wharfedale Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101.
