Three teachers from a Menston school spent their Easter holiday cross-country cycling from Morecambe to Bridlington to fundraise for Martin House Children’s Hospice.
Tom Hammil, Domenic Manfredi and Giles Wilkes from St Mary's School were inspired to raise money for the hospice – one of the school’s chosen charities – following an assembly in school in December by Martin House community fundraiser Sarah Tarpey.
Despite preparation and training time being at a premium, the teachers cycled the 175-mile route in two days, spending 13 hours and 36 minutes in the saddle and taking in some of the best countryside that Lancashire and Yorkshire has to offer.
The team was ably supported by colleagues Mark Twitchell and Will France, especially midway through the second day when two of the three bikes blew tyres.
At the latest count, almost £3,000 has been raised, mainly by students in and out of school through ventures such as the Year 7 Onesie Run and an Easter Chocolate Raffle.
