Children at Ghyll Royd School in Ilkley Road, Burley-in-Wharfedale, enjoyed a visit from Simon Wilkes, author of Robbie and the Red Robots on World Book Day.

Simon shared his new book with the children Good Bird and Bad Bird and taught the children how to develop a story from initial ideas. He also explained how writers work with illustrators to complete a book and finished the session with a personal reading of his new book.

The whole school also took part in a series of Book Trails developed by form six.

The children worked with their reading ‘buddy’ and chose three books to read based on a series of clues. The clues were a mini treasure trail around school leading them to different classrooms of themed reading including sport and dinosaurs.

Children across the school also took part in Readathon, a charity which raises money for seriously-ill children in the UK. Money raised by Readathon is shared between four UK children's charities. The children have raised just over £300 with money still coming in.

Head teacher Jo Jenkinson said: “We were delighted to have Simon in school to share his new book and teach the children about creative writing.

“The children were thrilled to hear first-hand how to develop stories and will be able to use many of the techniques shared by Simon within their creative writing work in school.

“The Book Trails were a great success and it was wonderful to see the children sharing and experiencing books in a new way.”
