Schools across Ilkley are celebrating success in Ilkley Rotary Club’s story writing and handwriting competitions.

Eleanor Millen, a Year 4 pupil at Burley Oaks Primary School, in Burley-in-Wharfedale, impressed judges with her handwriting in the annual competition. She was presented with a Lamy fountain pen in school this week after claiming first prize. Archie Meekley and Cerys Richards, in Year 5, were also winners of the story writing competition, with their fantastic narrative work. The stories were not to exceed 400 words and pupils were asked to choose their own subjects for the first competition of this kind, this year.

Claire Lee, head teacher of Burley Oaks Primary School said: “We are always keen to take part in the Rotary Club’s competitions; it is another fantastic way to celebrate the children’s work and achievements.”

Three pupils at Westville House also won prizes in the competitions organised among the local schools by Ilkley’s Rotary Club.

In the Year 5 Story Writing Competition, Poppy Coultas was the winner, and Cerys Ali was the runner up. The children were awarded book tokens for their achievements.

In the Year 4 Handwriting Competition, Sam Williams was the winner and was awarded a fountain pen.

Westville House was named as Joint Overall Winner of the Handwriting Competition, along with Ben Rhydding Primary School.
