A cycle ride along the route of an ancient pilgrimage trail in Northern Spain has raised thousands of pounds for charity.

Horsforth grandfather Ricky Hearn, 73, made the 560-mile journey to Santiago de Compostela along with two fellow Leeds cyclists, Malcolm Barker, 76, and Dave Gladman, 72.

The three men, who set off from St Jean de Pied de Port in France, completed their epic journey in just 14 days. They have raised several thousand pounds between them, although the final total is not yet known.

Mr Hearn and Mr Gladman were raising money for St George’s Crypt in Leeds, which helps the homeless, and where they both help out. Mr Gladman was also raising money for a store that provides furniture for people in need. Mr Barker completed his cycle ride in aid of prostate cancer.

Mr Hearn said: “It was 37 degrees for some parts of the bike ride. It was really, really hot.

“Obviously, the scenery was out of this world, and it was amazing to get to Santiago and see all the pilgrims there – thousands of them.”

He added: “It was amazing and exhilarating,” said Mr Hearn. “It was tough, but it was an exciting journey and an adventure.”

“As pilgrims getting to Santiago, it was an emotional and spiritual experience.”

Pilgrims have been travelling the route to Santiago since the ninth century, when they came to worship at what is believed to be the burial place of St James.
