A RUNNER from Otley has completed the opening stages of his new 'Charity Run Series' for Otley Action for Older People and the British Red Cross Disasters Appeal.

Danny Cooney first of all started off with a 10k trail and beach run on the Spanish Island of Formentera, followed the next day with a 10k road run on Ibiza. Two days later, he flew up to Galicia in the North West of Spain and took part in the Pontevedra Half Marathon near Vigo on Sunday, finishing with a time of 1 hour 38 minutes in heavy rain.

Danny, who works at Sainsburys in Otley, and is well known for his fundraising exploits, said: "I am absolutely shattered not from running, but catching all the planes, trains and buses and generally having no idea what I'm doing!

"I somehow managed to get lost between a hotel reception and finding my room, ending up in their kitchen and a bit like my running, wasn't cooking on gas! We have had some generous donations made to Otley Action for Older People and every £1 will help them locally, and the British Red Cross internationally."

Otley Action for Older People supports older people living in Otley and the surrounding area. Many of the older people supported are housebound and unable to get out without wheelchair accessible transport.

Recently the charity has been fundraising to buy a new minibus which costs over £80,000, but will benefit the older people of LS21 for at least the next 10 years. The charity has a bespoke Mercedes Sprinter on order, with anticipated delivery in December 2023.

The charity has made efforts to raise the funds over the past 12 months and can almost see the end in sight. However, they still need to raise more, so any donations would be very welcome.

Donations can be made by accessing the Otley Action website on www.otleyactionforolderpeople.org.uk and pressing the Donate Now button. Or, alternatively, visit the charity in the Chippendale Centre on Crossgate or phone Sue on 01943 463965.

On Friday, December 15, in the afternoon at Otley Action's Community Cafe, Coffee and Christmas themed cakes etc will be served and everyone is welcome.

Danny's next run is scheduled to be on Lanzarote in early December and hopefully Madeira in late January.
