IT WAS good weather for ducks but walkers braved the elements and kept their spirits up by sharing poems in a heritage centre event.

The walk by members of the Washburn Heritage Centre was part of the venue's @our Natural Health programme.

A spokesperson said: "The members took part in a beautiful walk, taking in Leathley, Riffa and Stainburn, before returning to the centre for a delicious lunch. Along the way we shared our favourite poems, demonstrating the benefits of poetry and the outdoors for our mental health.

"Despite getting very wet, the members enjoyed the beautiful spring countryside and the poetry readings.

"There are still a few available places on the remaining events in our programme. Please see our website for further details www.washburnvalley.org or ring 01943 880794. We will be delighted to welcome new members. Look out for the new programme starting in June with a very special street party for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee."

Events in May include bridge sessions, a Rainbow Super Foods Supper, a talk on Mapping Cholera in Leeds and a walk called Birds Stop Look and Listen.

Washburn Heritage Centre, described as 'a hidden gem', is run by volunteers to celebrate the heritage of the Washburn Valley. The centre is an extension to Fewston Church and is free to enter.

It features exhibitions about the heritage of the valley, and it runs an extensive programme of events including walks, workshops, talks and courses. At week-ends it holds a popular tea-room with a wide selection of home-made cakes.

Health and death in the valley are explored in a fascinating exhibition - Our Natural Health Service - which will run at the Washburn Heritage Centre until the end of May.

In its programme the centre says: "After two years of science, statistics and anxiety about health, our spring programme looks at how our beautiful natural environment and our own resourcefulness can be put to service to improve our health.

"In this programme, talks describe the lessons learned from years past and more recently, and also

explore the benefits of engaging with the natural world. Walks just to enjoy plus some with specialist leaders.

"As always, sociable Washburn suppers to lift the spirits with light-hearted health messages too. Workshops to stimulate mind and muscle for all ages and abilities.

"Start to safeguard your future health and have fun too with Our Natural Health Service programme."
