ILKLEY firefighters were called to assist crews from Silsden in tackling a barn fire in the early hours of today.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to a call out to a fire in the open at Fishbeck Lane, Silsden, shortly before 1am on Friday morning.

A spokesperson for Ilkley Fire Station said: "Ourselves and Keighley were called to assist crews from Silsden in tackling a barn fire at around 0100hrs today. The call was initially received as a fire in the open but with no further details. Four breathing apparatus and one hose reel were used to bring the incident to a safe conclusion. There were also three horses in the adjoining barn, all uninjured with no undue stress caused to them."

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson added: "Crews were initially called out to a report of a fire in the open. On arrival of the fire service it was discovered that a barn was involved in fire and crews made pumps three for water. Crews used four breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish the fire. No reports of any livestock involved.

"Appliances from Silsden Keighley and Ilkley attended."
