MOTORISTS are being urged to park considerately as gully cleaning work is carried out in Guiseley and Rawdon.
Leeds City Council has started cleaning highway gullies – the drains that collect water run-off from roads – and Councillor Paul Wadsworth is appealing to motorists to bear this in mind when parking their cars.
He said: "I am pleased the gullies are being cleaned across the ward.
"It will ensure the roads drain quickly of surface water, keeping them safer for drivers and less prone to splashing nearby pedestrians. It is three years since they were last cleaned, so I would like to see them all done quickly.
"However, I would like anyone parking their car in the area during the coming weeks to try and keep drains clear. If a car is parked over a drain cover, it means the council’s machines cannot get to them to clean out the gully beneath, disrupting the cleaning schedule and increasing costs.
"I think we would all like the area’s gullies to be cleaned as quickly and efficiently as possible, so it would help if motorists could please bear this in mind when parking their cars.
"The gulley cleaning tankers are large, conspicuous vehicles, so if you see one, please consider this when parking because it could be scheduled to do the road you are parking on."
