Thousands of pounds are to be spent on anti-burglary measures in North West Leeds.

Councillors have agreed £9,245 of funding to be granted for work on houses to make burglaries and other crimes harder to commit.

The funding will benefit all four council wards in the area and will be spent on measures such as new or improved door locks, new window locks, window shock alarms, door alarms, movement sensors, door chains or 'prikka strips' to put on the top of fences.

The funding, has been approved by the Outer North West Community Committee’s Community Safety sub-group, and the work will be carried out by Care and Repair working in partnership with Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police.

Adel and Wharfedale will get £3,134, while £2,999 will go to Horsforth. Otley and Yeadon will benefit from £2,052 and Guiseley and Rawdon will get £1,240.

Adel and Wharfedale councillor, Barry Anderson, who chairs the sub-group, said: "This is a good example of positive partnership working between the Police, us as local councillors and Care and Repair who will be installing the new security measures. The scheme will look to target hot spot areas where burglary and theft have been reported and seek to ensure that criminals do not get any easy opportunities to commit burglary, it is a positive scheme and I look forward to it being rolled out."

Guiseley and Rawdon councillor Graham Latty added: "Ensuring that vulnerable residents or vulnerable properties have the best security measures to protect against burglary and theft is a key aim of the local community committee and this funding will hopefully make local residents feel safer in their own homes. I am fully behind this and hope to see as many properties as possible benefit from improved security."

Horsforth councillor Dawn Collins said: "Making sure vulnerable residents in particular feel safe in their homes is essential. The improvements that will be made to local residential properties as a result of this project will provide piece of mind to residents and deter would be criminals in our area. I welcome the scheme and look forward to it being implemented in Horsforth."
