A ROW about coach parking arrangements in Otley has flared up again.

Sandra Threlfall launched a petition in 2013 against plans to allow buses to park for 24 hours on bays outside Chevin Health Store in Boroughgate.

Leeds City Council eventually agreed to maintain the 20-minute limit for coach parking outside the shop, which Mrs Threlfall owns.

But she says her business is suffering as some vehicles are staying for longer regardless. One did so for two-and-a-half hours last week... with the blessing of a parking enforcement officer, she claims.

Mrs Threlfall said: "I asked the traffic warden about the sign outside our shop, which clearly states coach parking is for 20 minutes, but he just said it was 'within his discretion' to give them permission to stay longer.

"I pointed out the impact this is having on my business, in terms of just making the shop invisible to passing trade and new customers, but he said he would be prepared to do the same thing again 'if necessary'.

"This just can't go on because I can't run a business if, every time they send a coach into town, it's allowed to park right outside of the shop for two-and-a-half hours.

"It really upsets me this is still a problem two years on.

"I would like the bus parking space moved entirely to let three or four cars park there instead.

"The coaches need to be given proper facilities so they have somewhere to go."

Mrs Threlfall said her takings fell from an average of £250 to £300 per day to £163 when the coach was outside. And she warned her business could fold unless the situation is sorted out.

"I can't carry on if they are continuing to do this," she said. "There is no way. The shop has been here for 25 years plus, but if this continues I will just have to close it."

She stressed: "With small shops going as they are in Otley, I don't think it is wise to continue like this. Small shops are struggling as it is.

"I just feel I am bashing my head against a brick wall, and now I am worried because of what the traffic warden said. I am concerned they are trying to introduce this where they can park as long as they like. What was the point of having a petition?"

Various bodies in Otley, meanwhile, including the town council, have been working hard to actually encourage more coaches to town to boost the economy.

Councillor Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon) said: "Councillors have been working for some time with the Chamber of Trade, Otley BID and Otley Town Partnership to improve coach facilities in Otley.

"We believe the town has a lot to offer the visitor, and coach parties help improve trade in local shops and cafes, which makes the town a more prosperous place.

"New long-stay coach facilities have been provided recently in Cattle Market Street, and we are currently reviewing how effective they are, should we have more, and if they are in the best place.

"I think there needs to be a bit of give and take on all sides, and I have passed on to parking enforcement the details of current coach parking so they can advise drivers of the most suitable place for them to stop."
