BEREAVED Ilkley residents and new parents now have to travel to Keighley or Bradford city centre to register a birth or a death, as Bradford Council has withdrawn its weekly local registrar sessions.

Ward councillor Anne Hawkesworth (Ind, Ilkley) has attacked the decision to withdraw the service locally.

She said: “Now the bereaved within Wharfedale will have to trail to Bradford – another place another valley,” she said.

“At a time you would expect to need support rather than yet another hurdle to leap. It really doesn’t seem too much to expect when this service was by appointment.”

A spokesman for Bradford Council said: “We currently attend Ilkley Town Hall one day a week to register births and deaths by appointment.

“Due to cuts in our budget we can no longer offer this service in Ilkley and Shipley.

“Our services are now available at The Register Office, City Hall, Bradford and the Town Hall, Keighley.”
