OTLEY’S new maypole will finally be installed and officially unveiled next week.

The town has been waiting for a replacement ever since the wooden landmark was found to be rotten and removed last June.

Now Leeds City council has announced that the new pole will be put in place in Manchester Square on Tuesday.

Evening road closures will be in force.

An official opening ceremony will be held at 2pm on Wednesday.

Councillor Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) said: “I invite everyone who is available to come down and see the return of the maypole.”

Otley’s Maypole is believed to be the tallest of its kind in England. The replacement pole has been produced by a firm that specialises in making ship masts.
