A NEW crossing to improve road safety is to be installed on a busy road in Otley.

Leeds City Council confirmed this week that the zebra crossing scheme for Burras Lane will go ahead in March.

The feature is to be installed near the road junction with Saville Court, with the work due to start on Monday, March 2, and to last two weeks.

The town’s ward councillors consulted most local residents on the proposal last year, when they went around knocking on doors to discuss the issue.

They also persuaded the council’s highways department to part-fund the work after Cllr Ryk Downes had secured a grant to cover some of the costs.

Cllr Colin Campbell said: “This is really good news because we have had regular complaints about the difficulties of crossing the road. This will be a significant improvement to highway safety. The request for a crossing came from two groups of residents - older people who wanted a safe crossing to Waitrose supermarket, and parents who use the route to get to Westgate Primary School.”

The installation work will be carried out between 9.30am and 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, and temporary traffic lights will be in operation. Highways say pedestrian access will remain available throughout, but ask residents to park off-road.
