More than £200,000 will be spent on roadworks in Otley and Yeadon to prepare them for the Tour de France.

The spending has been approved as part of a package of highway maintenance in the Leeds area in preparation for the event.

The programme of maintenance has been given the go-ahead by Leeds City Council to take place in this financial year and during 2014/15.

The work will include spending of £105,614 at Cross Green, £26,314 at Boroughgate, £30,081 on Westgate and £44,133 on Bradford Road.

The spending has been welcomed by Otley and Yeadon councillor Colin Campbell, who said: “I’m pleased to see that Leeds is using some of the money the government gave it to help fund the tour on this extra investment in Otley.”

He added: “It is another example of the benefits the tour will bring to Otley. This is extra money for road repairs which will last long after the Tour has passed.”

The work, which also includes maintenance on Arthington Lane and at Pool-in-Wharfedale, has been approved by Leeds City Council’s chief officer for Highways.

A council report said: “Following the decision that Leeds would host the Grand depart for the 2014 Tour de France a programme of works to ensure the roads and footways on the section of the route for day one of the Tour de France are in safe condition for spectators and riders to enjoy the day has been drawn up.”

It adds: “The recommendations made by Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO) the tour organisers on the required road condition for the Tour have been taken into consideration.”

“As have the comments made by the people behind the successful bid to bring the tour to Yorkshire, who promised the “Greatest occasion in the history of the Tour De France.”

The council is planning to start work during the summer to ensure maintenance is complete before the event.
