Two sisters and former Ilkley Grammar pupils are strapping up their walking boots ahead of a 30-hour, 100km trek for charity.

Kate and Jenna Appleby will take part in the Oxfam Trailtrekker challenge walking through the Yorkshire Dales National Park with Andrew and Graham Reid.

The group, with the team name The Dales Wintons will walk together through the day and night non-stop from June 1-2 and start and finish the trek in Skipton.

The route will see them pass through Gargrave, Malham, Fountains Fell, Cam Farm, Deepdale, Buckden and Conistone. They will only have brief ten-minute rests to ensure they finish the challenge in less than 30 hours.

Kate Appleby, 23, said: “We wanted to do this challenge because it is something different, lots of people do sponsored runs, but on the whole we are not the running types.

“It will challenge us. It is a test of patience and endurance. It is also a great way to discover the Dales in a way none of us have before.

“It will also be something really good to do as a team and amongst a lot of other people.”

The group are training in any spare time they have together and have completed their first training walk up Great Whernside, in very snowy conditions.

The two sisters formerly of Ben Rhydding Drive have lived in Ilkley most of their lives but have recently moved for work, though their family still live in the town.

Along with their family they spent many hours during most weekends walking on the moors. But this challenge is the biggest to date for the four-strong team.

Miss Appleby added: “Ilkley is a beautiful part of the world and was a lovely place to grow up.

“We really enjoyed our walks across the Ilkley moors but we never did anything of this length and scale.”

The group aim to raise £1,800 and will organise various raffles and bucket collections in the run up to the challenge.

The event is an annual fundraiser organised by the charity and about 300 people usually take part each year. Oxfam works to end poverty and helps to rebuild the lives of people affected by it.
