Thought for the Week

CHRISTMAS Eve is for some folk a day of frantic activity, checking that there is enough food to feed not only the family but a potential invasion, and queuing for the turkey. Those last minute presents are being sought on busy high streets with cheerful Christmas lights to add to the festivities, and gifts are wrapped. For many with younger children, a Christingle service will be enjoyed, and others will make their way to church for the watch-night service. Somehow, when the shops close, a calm settles, and people relax as celebrations begin.

Writing this piece a week ahead, I am aware that so often dark tragedies can mar this time of year, yet I want this to be a cheerful note. Whatever has gone on in the world in the last few days, tomorrow is the day on which to pause and take the opportunity offered to let life fall into perspective once more, with happy and peaceful celebrations.

Christmas is not an easy time for some, with a dear one missing from the gatherings, but let us seek occasion to take delight in happiness we see around. Christmas with little children is special. One of my favourite photographs is of two of my young relatives – eighteen months at the time. The decorated Christmas tree with its twinkling lights and coloured baubles stands within the playpen, and the twins are on the outside looking in through the bars, with looks of wonderment and delight at the tree and lights.

Many churches have crib scenes, with figures of Joseph, Mary and the baby, plus the visiting shepherds. In one church, the crib scene had been set out under the communion table. During the service a little girl, aged about two or so, walked up to the scene and stood there looking for a while, and the service just continued. Then the little girl stepped into the scene amongst the figures and sat down. There she remained for the rest of the service. Can you picture her? She had stepped into the story – she had joined Jesus in that scene; she had joined God’s family of Mary, Joseph and Jesus; she had said by her actions, “I want to be part of this”. And the lovely thing was that she was comfortable and happy there.

That is the invitation of Christmas. To join Jesus, not just to view him from the sidelines; not to just be the one on the outside looking in, but to be the one invited where happiness and welcome are found. ‘Joy to the world’, is the message of a carol, and a prayer for the world.

Joy to the world! The Lord has come

Let earth receive her King!

Let every heart prepare Him room

As you enjoy the fun and happiness that Christmas offers, may you know God’s peace in your hearts and in your lives. Happy Christmas!
