THE controversial French drama Elle is Ikley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, April 22 (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).

The brilliant and ageless Isabelle Huppert plays Michele, the CEO of a video games company, who is attacked in her home by an intruder. She confounds friends, colleagues and police by refusing to behave as a victim, and decides to track down her assailant. Soon the two are drawn into a strange, dark game with each vieing for control.

Since the release of this 18-rated film a debate has raged over claims of its alleged misogyny, with feminist film critics weighing in on both sides of the argument. It marks the return to European art cinema of Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, long resident in Hollywood where his huge successes included Robocop, Total Recall and Basic Instinct. Both film and star won Cesars, the French equivalent of the Oscars.

Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but their admission cannot be guaranteed unless they reserve tickets in advance by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097. More information about the film society visit www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
