THE Spanish police thriller Marshland is Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, October 9 (8pm at Ilkley Playhouse.)

Juan and Pedro, detectives from Madrid, arrive in a remote part of Spain to investigate the disappearance of a pair of teenage sisters, the latest in a string of missing women. They find themselves in a hostile environment where things are done very differently from their big city ways. Extra tension arises from their relationship with each other, as the older detective may have a very dark past - this is certainly not the usual police “buddy” movie.

Two things in particular set Marshland apart from other modern Spanish films. One is the location – the extraordinary Guadalquivir marshes in south-west Spain; the other is the period, for the action takes place in 1980, a few years after the end of the Franco dictatorship, when Spain was inbetween a dark and violent past and an uncertain future. The film won an extraordinary ten Spanish academy awards.

This screening replaces the one originally advertised in the film society's brochure, Julieta, which will now be shown in January.

Non-members are requested to reserve tickets (£4) by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097. Membership for the new season is still available, and it is possible to join on the night. More information at ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
