THE NIGHTMARE world of Big Brother will be unveiled to ballet lovers who are being offered exclusive behind the scenes access to a dance version of 1984.

Northern Ballet has organised a 'Try Before You Buy’ event in the run up to its world premiere adaptation of Orwell's dystopian classic.

For the cost of £5 per person the audience will be offered the chance to gain a unique insight into how a new ballet is created through access to rehearsals, talks by the creative team and the performance of an exclusive excerpt.

The event will be held on August 19 at Northern Ballet’s Leeds city-centre HQ from 6pm to 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 per person and are on sale now at northernballet.com/1984. The ticket price includes refreshments and the £5 is redeemable against the cost of a ticket to see 1984 at the West Yorkshire Playhouse from September 5 to 12.

Recently awarded Best Company at the European Taglioni Ballet Awards, Northern Ballet is bringing Orwell’s vision of the future to life in Leeds before touring nationally until May 2016. Choreographed by Yorkshire-born Jonathan Watkins, Northern Ballet’s 1984 is the first full-length ballet adaptation of George Orwell’s renowned novel and is set to an original score.

In the production, Ministry of Truth worker Winston Smith lives in a world of absolute conformity, his every action scrutinised by Big Brother. Whilst outwardly conforming to Party doctrine, he is secretly disillusioned, illegally documenting his thoughts in a diary. When one day he receives a love note from Julia, a colleague he suspected on spying on him for the Thought Police, the pair instead begin an illicit affair leading a dangerous double life putting physical desire above Party discipline. As their romance develops and they prepare for an act of political rebellion, Winston and Julia discover that Big Brother is always watching and no one can be trusted; least of all themselves.
