FORMER Guiseley boss Bobby Davison is one of the early favourites to become Derby County’s new boss.

Davison, currently coaching Hungarian side Ferencvaros, was linked with the post after the resignation of Menston-based Paul Jewell on Monday Davison, who scored 98 goal in a Rams shirt, is a huge favourite with the Derby fans.

He is said to be lining up Rob Hindmarch and Mark Lillis as his coaching staff.

The former Guiseley boss is believed to be very interested in the job.

He moved to Hungary after losing his job as assistant manager at Bradford City two years ago.

Davison has no experience as a Football League manager but is a well respected coach and is highly regarded.

The announcement of Jewell’s resignation followed the Rams’ 1-0 defeat at home by Ipswich Town on Sunday, which left the club hovering just five points above the relegation zone in the Coca Cola Championship.

Jewell, 44, took over at Pride Park in November 2007 but endured a difficult debut term at the helm as the club suffered relegation from the Premier League with a record low points total.

This campaign, Derby have managed seven wins from their opening 26 league matches, and the recent setback to Ipswich was met by a chorus of boos by supporters.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “Derby County can confirm today that the club has parted company with manager Paul Jewell with immediate effect.

“Paul has taken the decision to leave his role as he believes it is in the best interests of the club, and feels that he is no longer in a position to take the club forward.

“It is with great regret that we accept this decision and Derby County would like to put on record its thanks to Paul Jewell for his effort and commitment over the last 12 months.

“Assistant manager Chris Hutchings will take charge of the club with immediate effect and will lead the team for the next two fixtures, away to Forest Green Rovers in the FA Cup and at home to Manchester United in the Carling Cup semi-final.”

Jewell had been with the East Midlands club just over a year. Prior to that he had been out of football management after quitting Wigan at the end of the previous season.

He took over at Derby from Billy Davies at a point when the Rams were bottom of the Premier League after picking up just six points from their opening 14 games following their promotion the previous season.

Jewell guided Bradford City into the Premier League for the first time in 1999. He also managed Sheffield Wednesday.

The Liverpudlian moved to Menston with wife Ann-Marie, son Sam and daughter Alexandra after they had lived for a number of years at Burley Woodhead.

Sam, a former pupil at Menston St Mary’s School, is a very promising golfer and is busy carving himself a career in that sport.
