Gabriel Johnson’s sensational second-half stoppage time strike against table-toppers Radcliffe FC took Guiseley into fifth place in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division, on Saturday.

The lively attacker neatly slotted home via substitute Mike Afuye’s header during a fabulous finish to an otherwise even contest.

The Lions were rewarded having pressed hard to find a winner during the frenetic final stages.

Guiseley are the first team to do the double over the runaway leaders this season and they've won back-to-back league games for the first time since early November.

The game began tentatively with both sides keen to avoid a mistake but both teams soon created opportunities.

A Kofi Moore effort fell just wide of the left-hand post on the quarter-hour mark.

Liam Tongue fired a shot straight at visiting goalkeeper Mateusz Hewelt in the 22nd minute.

Rick Smith’s half-volley was held well by home goalkeeper Ollie Battersby mid-way through the first half.

Brown reacted superbly to head Olly Thornley’s effort off the line in the 34th minute before Smith hit a header over the bar two minutes later.

Johnson’s attempt flashed over the bar in the 41st minute following a Reece Kendall cross.

Both sides began the second half in a lively manner with Luke Mariette’s shot flying over in the 52nd minute.

A stinging Josh Hancock strike was saved well by Battersby in the 62nd minute with the same player’s edge-of-the-box effort flying wide in the 65th minute.

Guiseley fought hard to find a winner with Johnson unlucky to see his header deflected out for a corner in the 83rd minute. Afuye’s 87th minute shot was too close to the goalkeeper.

Johnson’s winner secured a vital three points as Guiseley battle to secure a spot in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division play-offs.

The Lions travel to fellow play-off contenders Marine on Saturday 16 March before a visit to Whitby Town on Tuesday 19 March.
