FOLLOWING a frantic first half in which five goals were scored, Guiseley eventually hung on to their lead to claim a 3-2 victory at home Atherton Collieries on Tuesday evening.

Guiseley started the game positively and were fully rewarded for their bright start after going 2-0 up within the first 17 minutes through strikes from Tom Denton and Gabriel Johnson.

The former found the ball in the box before powering a fierce strike beyond the reach of Buckley to give the hosts the lead.

Johnson then added Guiseley’s second only six minutes later, cutting through the away side’s defence with ease.

Reece Kendall drilled a low ball into the box and there was Johnson to head home.

In a nightmare following seven minutes, the home side’s lead was gone, giving the visitors a huge boost before the interval.

Two quick goals through Jordan Adams and a stunner from Ben Rydel had Atherton level, but the drama wasn’t over yet.

Guiseley’s winner came just before the interval, as they won a penalty in stoppage time of the first half, and Denton made no mistake in converting it to give The Lions a valuable three points.

Next up for the Nethermoor side is a home league fixture against Stafford Rangers on Saturday, 3pm.
