Skyrac's young athletes enjoyed an outstanding day last Sunday at the U-15 and U-17 Northern Indoor Championships at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

The team of six elite athletes not only claimed five finalists they also set three personal bests and set Skyrac Club Indoor records.

Flying the flag for Skyrac was 14 year-old Harriet Middlebrough, who attends The Girls Grammar School, Bradford. She set a personal best time in her heat in the U-15 Girls' 800m of 2min 29.9 secs.

In the final Harriet equalled her personal best placing fourth only 0.01 secs from the bronze medal. Harriet's indoor time is a Skyrac Club record for an U-15 Girl.

Her training partner 13 year-old Katie Seddon from Garforth, who was making her Skyrac debut, came fifth in her heat with a personal best time of 2 mins 35 secs.

In the U-17 men's 400m Skyrac had two athletes in the final. Placing fourth was Ben Holmes, of Carlton Manor School, Leeds, and placing sixth was Oliver Clemo, of Leeds Grammar School. Ben's heat time of 53.9 secs sets a Skyrac indoor record.

In the U-17 men's 200m Skyrac's Jamel Chisholm, of Lawnswood School, ran a fast 23.4 secs in his heat and just missed out on running in the final by 0.01 secs.

The time by Jamel also sets a Skyrac indoor club record. Jamel also made the 60m final in placing sixth in a fast time of 7.39 secs which smashes the Skyrac club record.

In the U-17 women's 300m Skyrac's Charlotte James, of Prince Henry's Grammar School, Otley won her heat in 42.3 secs. In the final Charlotte pulled up with a hamstring problem 100m from the finish. Charlotte's heat time was the third fastest on the day.

Skyrac had athletes competing at Roundhay Park, Leeds, on Saturday in the Northern Cross-Country Championships.

In the U-13 girls Molly O'Keefe, who is returning to athletics after a long lay off after a serious foot injury, came 197th.

In the U-15 girls Bethany Bloor came 179th while in the U-17 women Bethany Harrison, of Menston St Mary's School, finished 91st.

In the U-13 boys J Bloor came 194t and in the U-15 boys Danny Harrison, of Menston St Mary's, came 150th, Adam Brooks 190th and J Burrell 195th.

In the senior men's race Bob Pritchard came 420th, Malcolm Coles 492nd and N Bloor 573rd.

The next cross-country race where young athletes from Skyrac Athletic Club will be competing will be at the West Yorkshire Schools Cross-Country Championships on Saturday - for further details please contact the club.

Ilkley Harriers Diane Haggar was first Ilkley lady at Saturday's Northern Cross-Country Championships at Roundhay Park in 131st place in 34:30 over the 8km course.

Diane Kitchen was 199th in 37:24. Over the 12k men's course, Jim Ryder was 221st in 46:59, Dave Wilby 276th in 48:36, Justin Phillips 355th in 50:15, and Mark Iley 367th in 50:28.

A total of 13 juniors ran, with runners in every category 13-17. For both the U-13 girls and boys categories Ilkley had complete teams with the girls 23rd and the boys 24th.

Individual results were: 118, Ellie Taylor (13.36); 172, Sophie Latta (14.24); 216, Lily Kitchen (16.34) and 221, Jessica Holden (17.40).

The boys had 97th Joshua Stephens (12.18); 134, Jerome Martill (12.44); 146, Sam Haggar (12.56); and 192, Josh Gill in his first race for the club in 16.22.

Ilkley's two U-15 competitors were Fiona Jordan in 104th place in 16.33 and Stephen Clarke in 187th place in 16.29.

In the U-17's race Jenny Dybeck was 47th in 19.00, Catherine Gibbons 64th in 19.44 and in the boys' race George Stevens was 159th in 27.18.

At the Stanbury Splash, Graham Pearce finished a very impressive second place behind Ian Holmes. Steve Turland was next Harrier home, followed by Dave Tait.

Bob Hamilton's cycle over to Penistone must have been a good warm-up as he was next, then Richard Joel, Dan Goodey, Sally Malir, Alison Weston, Diana Haggar, Elizabeth McCann, Bob Hamilton, Val Kerr, Pete Bedwell, and Emma Payne.

Neil Chapman and Pete Shields made their annual pilgrimage over to North Ferriby near Hull to tackle one of the oldest ten mile races in the country. Neil finished in 36th place (4th V50) in 65.34; and Pete finished 136th (4th V60) in 73.55.

A bunch of Harriers made their way to Dalby Forest for the Open 5 Run/Bike orienteering event. Dave and Jo Taylor were third in the mixed vet 40 category.

Heather Dawe won the solo female class and Kelly Harrison was seventh; Nicky Jaquiery and Jo Foster were third female pair and Sue Booth was in the fourth female pair; in the male solo class Jamie Hutchinson was 13th and Dave Wilby 19th; in male pairs Eddie Winslow was in the second team, and Jim Ryder and Ken Jaquiery were 21st.

The 12km course was surprisingly dry after such a wet week but no doubt due to gale force winds which proved testing for the runners and officials.

Matthew Cox who finished 113th (43.35) was first Otley finisher with Andrew Robertshaw 149th (44.59), Dale Foster 311th (49.26), Ray Hawksby 460th (53.31), John Armistead 463rd (53.37), Tom Hannah 560th (57.12) and Don Buffham 635th (62.25) making up the rest of the team. Laura Martin 116th (34.02), Kath Robertshaw 239th (39.53) and Carol Armistead (41.25) all participated in the 8km Ladies race.

On Sunday seven members ran in the 25th Soreen Stanbury Splash. The seven mile 1200ft course was slightly modified this year but also much drier than expected.

Hugh Pearson, whose daughter Megan ran in the Junior Quarry Run finishing in a time of 16.30, had an excellent run finishing 35th (53.49).

Chris Stacey finished in around 58 mins but in a close race Helen Walsh (66.40) finished strongly passing Andrew Sumner (67.02) and Colin Best (67.16) in the last mile. Graham Stead (71.58) and David Cattanach (82.20) completed the Otley AC line up in a race won once again by Ian Holmes.

Club training nights are as usual this week on Tuesday and Thursday meeting at 7.15pm at Otley Rugby Club Cross Green. New members are always welcome.

A crowd of 288 runners were at the 25th Stanbury Splash won for the 14th time by Ian Holmes (Bingley) in 44:30 with Helen Glover (Keighley and Craven) 30th and first lady.

The four from Skyrac were: 69th Martin Farrar (57.07), 175th Stephen Batley (65.22), 188th Max Wood (66.54) and 218th Malcolm Coles (69.39).

A more select group of 79 runners were at White Holme. Ricky Graham's winning time was 1.17.42 and Skyrac runners came in 23rd Rob Weston (1.34.16), 26th Robert Pritchard (1.36.43) and 47th Graham Breeze (1.44.41).
