THE weekly Saturday Parkrun events hit a leap year milestone this week.

This was the first opportunity to run a Parkrun on a leap year Saturday, February 29, since the events were founded back in 2004 – the next opportunity will be 2048.

Twelve Airecentre Pacers took this opportunity with both hands, 11 running at Bradford's Lister Park and one at Woodhouse Moor in Leeds.

One Pacer made it a day to remember, by not only winning the event, but also recording a Parkrun personal best.

Andrew Humphries led the Pacers home in a sprightly 17.03 to win followed by Owain Gwylym (20.47), Chris Hill (23.20), Andy Gledhill (26.57), Megan Dennison (27.24), Sharon Elms (27.48), Amanda Connolly (28.32 and first FV50-54), Jaqueline Reid (30.44), Sally Russ (35.11), Cath Tindall (35.15) and Ewen Pearson (39.18).

Poppy Cartwright ran at Woodhouse Moor (Leeds) in 25.39.

Parkruns now attract 6.3million runners worldwide with nearly 2.5 million in the UK supported by half a million volunteers each week.

Meanwhile, the Sir Titus Trott race was running a leap year special along the canal from Saltaire with four races on offer (marathon, 20 miles, half marathon and 10k). Pacer Carole Keighley completed the 10k in 57.36.
