BEN Rhydding Ladies returned to form for two matches over the weekend, culminating in a 2-0 win in the England Hockey Cup against a strong and previously undefeated Nottingham University side.

The game was played in the wind and rain, but after defending well against some strong pressure from the students, Kate Wood battled into the opposition defence and won a penalty flick, which was duly converted by Kelly Baxter.

A second goal scored from a penalty corner by Beth Cordukes sealed a win in this cup quarter-final tie.

They advance to the semi-finals against Hampstead and Westminster, who will make the journey north on March 31.

The ladies also despatched Timperley 5-1 in the league on Saturday with four first half goals from Beth Cordukes, Laura Smith (2) and Kate Wood.

They eased off in the second half with Kelly Baxter picking up a fifth just before the final whistle.

Ben Rhydding Men beat Newcastle University 5-2 in a North Premier League match at home.

The game started with some strong pressing by Rhydding, as Robert Ramsden popped the ball through to Max Helme, who slotted home.

The game continued to be end-to-end and Will Musgrave to opened up on his lethal reverse to make it 2-0.

In the final 15 minutes, after a period of prolonged pressure, George Gamble mopped up after a corner to stretch the lead to 3-0.

The students bounced back and scored almost immediately before Musgrave scored a sizzling, solo goal to make it 4-1.

Will McHugh added to this when Neil Sugden floated a lovely ball through for him to smash home a reverse for 5-1.

Newcastle scored a consolation goal in the dying minutes.

This Saturday the ladies are again at home against Durham University at 1.30pm before the men play in the big local derby with top of the league Harrogate at 3pm.
