Yarnbury 27 Goole 33

YARNBURY scored five tries but were unable to save themselves from a Yorkshire Two defeat at Brownberrie Lane.

At 28-10 down they had been staring at a much bigger defeat so securing two bonus points was some small consolation, but they may feel they could have won after pulling back to 28-27 with five minutes to go.

Yarnbury had four significant pack members back with both props Lewis Atha and Dan Penman returning along with second row Ian Maycock and No.8 Martin Rainey.

The added strength in the pack put Goole under the cosh in the scrums and they were driven off the ball on numerous occasions, only to be saved by their impressive No.8 Jamie Shand who managed to pick up as his pack went backwards.

Yarnbury missed several good chances to get over the line with Maycock and Rainey held up while both wingers were bundled into touch on the last pass.

In contrast. Goole took their first chance when a speculative punt upfield caused confusion and they re-gathered for wing forward Robert Shand to cross for the first score. Reece Moore’s conversion made it 7-0.

The game was too open and Yarnbury were moving quick ball in an effort to make space and finally got left wing Luke Cowley into space to score a try.

Yarnbury took the lead when their pack made progress down the middle before breaking through the pack down the middle to create a try for wing forward George Bowen.

The home side were in the ascendancy in the forwards but poor kicking gave Goole the chance to move the ball through their backs and create another overlap for winger Richard Binnas to score in the corner.

Moore added the extras from out wide to regain the lead before Jamie Shand managed to squeeze over again as the interval approached. Moore’s third conversion made it 21-10 at the break.

Goole pressed after the break and Yarnbury fell further behind when Maycock was deemed to have made a high tackle and the referee awarded a penalty try.

Despite being down to 14 men, Yarnbury produced their best spell of the match as the pack took control driving the game up the slope into the 22.

The introduction of former captain Oliver Cashman at scrum half and Cameron Newby on the right wing lifted the side.

Goole were clinging on and when Daniel Pound converted Yarnbury’s fifth try from Rainey, the lead was down to a single point with five minutes left.

The game was there for the taking and it was Goole who had the final say. A slack pass was snapped up by James Chantrey to seal their victory.
