Yarnbury 20 Old Otliensians 8

YARNBURY defeated their newly-promoted neighbours to register their first Yorkshire Two win of the season.

They were quickly into their stride and created early pressure before going ahead with a seventh-minute penalty from Daniel Pound.

The lead was extended when Otliensians scrum half Jack Wragg was pressured into sending out a weak pass which resulted in the subsequent clearance kick being charged down y centre Nathan Benton who gathered before scoring under the posts. Pounds conversion made it 10-0.

Otliensians countered through their backs with both centres making ground but the home defence held firm.

Yarnbury responded and let a great chance slip away when losing the ball over the line after pinching a line out.

They didn't have to wait too long for their second try. Otliensians conceded a penalty for offside and found themselves pushed back into their 22.

Hooker Tom Gilchrist's accurate throw picked out George Bowen and his second row colleague James Falgate powered to the line. Pound added on the conversion.

Yarnbury had a 17-0 lead but Otliensians were still looking dangerous on the break despite the handicap of having to deal with a wet ball.

They were eventually rewarded for their efforts when winger Connor Bateman ghosted diagonally through the cover to score to the left of the posts after a fine run. Stand off Will Cooper missed the conversion.

Yarnbury had to weather further attacks from Otliensians as the half drew to a close.

The home side stretched their lead early in the second half when Pound landed a penalty.

Their tactics for playing down the slope were simple. George Oldridge's powerful boot repeatedly drove the ball into Otliensians territory.

Apart from an attacking line-out where Yarnbury were penalised for accidental offside and an Oldridge run down the left touchline, the game degenerated into a midfield war of attrition with both defences on top.

Yarnbury lost line-outs at crucial times and Otliensians were unable to find the fluency needed to turn to make the most of their possession.

Otliensians tried to reduce the arrears with some concerted pressure up the slope in the last few minutes but Yarnbury held firm to take the win.
