KEN Gee has joined an elite group of karate experts to achieve the Japanese rank of kudan – ninth degree black belt – almost 50 years after taking up the sport.
Shihan (master instructor) Gee, the founder and principle of Bridge Church-based Otley Karate Centre, received the promotion in front of a huge audience at a major national tournament.
Gee was presented with the award by the vice-president of the International Shukokai/Shito-ryu Karate Alliance as he joined a select band of worldwide karate hierarchy, most of Japanese origin, who have achieve this distinguished position.
"When I walked through the door of my first karate club, I only had one thing on my mind – to become a karate black belt," said Gee.
"After four gruelling years of training, I did reach that goal, only then to be told I was merely on the first rung of a long promotional ladder which would take a staggering 54 years to climb.
"Thankfully, I found the belief and physical drive to carry on the climb and now, as a ninth dan, I can proudly count myself as a part of the inner circle of world karate masters."
